More than 1,000 COVID-19 cases reported in 72 hours

Muscat: Over 1,000 new cases and four deaths from COVID-19 were registered in Oman in a span of just 72 hours, between May 14 and 16.

According to the daily updates of new COVID-19 cases reported by the Sultanate’s Government Communications Centre (GCC), 404 new cases were registered on Saturday, 16 May, along with 86 recoveries. This meant that from last Thursday to Saturday, Oman reported 1,010 new cases.

The death of an Omani man who passed away from the infection was also reported on the same day, making him the 21st casualty of the disease.

A day prior, on Friday, 284 more people tested positive for the disease, and 47 others reportedly recovered. The deaths of two other persons – a resident aged 43 years and a 36-year-old citizen – were also announced on the day. Their unfortunate demise meant the country had seen the disease claim victims number 19 and 20.

On Thursday, the death of one more victim of COVID-19 was announced: a 31-year-old resident had succumbed, making him the 18th victim. A further 322 new cases of infection and 14 recoveries had been reported on this day.

Overall, there have been 5,029 cases of the novel coronavirus in Oman, 1,436 recoveries, and 21 deaths.
