NEW DELHI: India's federal health ministry Wednesday evening said one new death due to the COVID-19 and 455 new positive cases were reported since the morning across the country, taking the number of deaths to 1,008 and total cases to 31,787.
"As of 5:00 p.m. (local time) today, 1,008 deaths related to novel coronavirus have been recorded in the country," read the information released by the ministry.
On Wednesday morning, the number of COVID-19 cases in the country was 31,332 and the death toll was 1,007.
According to ministry officials, so far 7,797 people have been discharged from hospitals after showing improvement.
"The number of active cases in the country right now is 22,982," the statement said.
Wednesday marks the 36th straight day of an ongoing lockdown across the country announced by the government to contain the spread of the pandemic.
The lockdown which was announced on March 25 has been extended until May 3.
India's Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Wednesday said the country was progressively moving toward a better overall situation day by day.
