Worm-infested wood used to make furniture in Oman

Muscat: A furniture maker in Al Dhahira was caught red-handed using worm-infested wood and filthy materials when making their wares.

A statement by the Public Authority for Consumer Protection read, “Multiple calls came from consumers regarding a manufacturer using old materials when making furniture. Upon inspection, it became clear that a number of expat workers at the shop were using worm-infested wood to make their furniture, which was then clothed in dirty sponge pieces.

“Officials were able to discover the use of rotten wood and textiles when making furniture for home use. Following the discover, all furniture was seized and legal action was taken against the responsible person for violating decision number 255/2015 which prohibits the use of such materials in furniture,” the statement added.

Said Al Amairy, acting Director of Consumer Protection in Al Dhahira, said, “These acts exhibit a lack of the minimum amount of integrity, and they can put the consumer in danger, and they are a type of fraud that infringe on the legal rights of consumers.”
