Gas-powered electricity production companies grapple to set capacities

Muscat: Yaqub bin Saif Al Kiyumi, CEO of Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWPC), said that it has not so far been decided which electricity production companies will be decommissioned during the first phase of 2021.
In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA), Al Kiyumi pointed out that gas stations whose contracts will expire by the end of 2021 still compete to produce the specified capacities.
Setting the final required capacity will be closely associated with the growth or decline of demand, said Al Kiyumi, adding that capacities and bids are likely to be finalized during the second half of this year, he said.
So far, he explained, tender for the two projects of Manah Solar Power has not been floated. The current stage only saw the qualification of developers, he added, noting that the energy-from-waste project is still under feasibility study in the backdrop of a slump in demand for electricity due to economic slowdown.
