Lions are starving in a national zoo in Yemen's rebel-held capital Sanaa.

The country's civil war has caused the collapse of local currency and escalation of food prices, making it hard to get enough food and medical care for animals in the zoo.

Fouad al-Harsh, who is in charge of taking care of the zoo, said that four lions have died over the past weeks due to severe food shortages and diseases.

Established in 1999, the zoo has about 1,159 animals, including 31 lions, two Arabian leopards, four ostriches, four hyenas, and other animals.
