#OmanPride: Omani girl makes film to highlight issues of hearing impaired

Muscat: An Omani girl has utilised her filmmaking skills to raise awareness among the public about hearing impaired people having the same dreams and ambitions as normal people.
Buthaina Al Kindi, who proudly showed the Times of Oman a short film she has produced about her sister who is deaf, said people who are deaf also have dreams and deserve to be treated better.

Al Kindi explained that when she had to make a film for a school project, the situation of her sister inspired her to make the film entitled ‘Sound of Hope.’
“I thought that this would be very important for my sister because no one is taking care of her. So I decided to make a video about her to show the people that she is important in this life and that she can do many things that others also do,” she stated.
Among the challenges her sister was facing, was that her classmates ignored her and did not want to speak to her. “It makes her feel so lonely in class,” she said. Al Kindi told TOO that her other sister and cousins are also deaf.
In the film ‘Sound of Hope,’ Al Kindi portrays her sister expressing her frustration about others ignoring or bullying her.
“People think I can do nothing in this life. But I don’t care about what they say. All I care about is being what I want to be in this life.”
Eventually, she expresses her courage to follow her own dreams instead of being put off by what others think or say. The short film, in English and subtitled in Arabic, offers a close and personal encounter with someone who is deaf.
“I showed the video to my teacher and she was so impressed. She thought it was a beautiful thing,” Al Kindi said.
She further said she is happy to be able to show her film to the public at the Ministry of Education booth at the COMEX 2016 Exhibition.
“I feel so proud and I feel like I needed to do this in my life,” she said. In addition to making the public aware about the abilities of people who are deaf, making films is also a way for Al Kindi to showcase her talents on her own YouTube channel.
“It’s also very important to show people my talent,” she said. She said she hopes to get one million subscribers to her YouTube channel named ‘Rainbow Glitter.’
Just as it is her dream to reach a million subscribers, everyone should be aware that people who are deaf have dreams of their own.
“I want to send a message to the people that they should take care of these kind of persons and should make them feel that they are the same like any other person. They are people like us. They are in this life to make their dreams come true,” she said.
