The Sultanate of Oman is truly a country of multiple facets, and to fully understand why it is called the' Essence of Arabia', one needs to experience each and every one of them.
The landscape of Jabal Akhdar – known in English as the Green Mountain – is a host to many unique traditions that aren’t found elsewhere in the country.
One of the most mesmerising traditions is the preparation of rosewater from the indigenous Jabal Akdhar rose.
“As part of the Western Hajar Mountains, the so called Green Mountain is the perfect getaway for hiking enthusiasts and mountain-lovers,” says the Ministry of Tourism. “Abandoned villages, deep canyons and excellent hotels guarantee for a great stay. In April, when the famous roses are in full bloom, you can witness the distillation of rose water and get enchanted by the infatuating scent surrounding you.”

Rosewater is an important ingredient in several spa treatments and therapeutic practices across the Sultanate. To witness the making of the rosewater from the delicate pink petals of the flower and inhale its often intoxicating and fragrant smell is enough to dismiss your worries.
When you witness the making of this rosewater, you are witnessing an integral part of Omani culture and hospitality that is woven into the fabric of this nation. Trips to see these Omani artisans in action are a must-see for whoever comes to Oman, as well as those who live here, and are regularly organised by travel guides here. In addition, it is almost always – with good reason – found on lists of must-see activities in Oman.
“Amongst the highest peaks in the Hajar Mountain range, Jabal Al Akhdar boasts of spectacular views and cool temperatures,” added the Ministry of Tourism. “Jabal Al Akhdar’s green terrace fields include rose bushes that bloom in March annually. It is then that local entrepreneurs distil rose water from the blossoms, an ancient tradition that visitors are welcome to observe. There are several hiking and off-roading trails across the mountain top that that can be explored. Wadi Bani Habib, with its abandoned villages, is especially interesting for visitors.

“Jabal Al Akhdar is known for its Mediterranean climate,” explained the ministry. “Temperatures during winter drop to below zero Celsius, with it witnessing snow fall at times, and rise in summer to 22 degrees Celsius. Due to its location and unique weather, the Green Mountain produces a variety of fruits, such as apricots, plums, figs, grapes, apples and pears, as well as almonds, walnuts and saffron. The pomegranate that grows here is counted amongst the finest of its kind in the world.”
