Madrid: FC Barcelona on Friday confirmed that young striker Carles Perez has extended his contract with the club until the end of June 2022.
The new deal sees the 21-year-old maintain the release clause of 100 million euros (109 million US dollars).
The deal is a reward for Perez’s excellent start to the current season in which he has taken advantage of the injuries suffered by Leo Messi, Luis Suarez and Ousmane Dembele to make five first team appearances, and score one goal.
Barca coach Ernesto Valverde put him on the right side of the attack and he has shown his willingness to try and beat his marker and get the ball into the rival penalty area.
Perez could well get another chance on Saturday with Leo Messi missing the Liga Santander trip to Getafe with injury.
When asked about Messi in his pre-game press conference on Friday, Barca coach Valverde admitted that his side would “miss an absolutely fundamental player,” but assured there were “sufficient resources in the squad” to cover for his absence.
Barcelona are looking for their first away win of the season in Getafe after losing 1-0 in Bilbao, drawing 2-2 away to Osasuna and losing 2-0 in Granada in the Liga Santander, while their Champions League visit to face Borussia Dortmund on September 17th ended in a 0-0 draw.
