Jonty Rhodes applies for team India's fielding coach job

New Delhi: Former South African cricketer and world-class fielder Jonty Rhodes has applied for the fielding coach position for the Indian cricketing team.

Rhodes’ decision came after India’s Board for Control for Cricket (BCCI) in India opened applications for the positions of head coach and support staff for the Indian team.

A senior BCCI official told an Indian news agency that even though Rhodes has never worked with any national team, he is still in contention because he coached the Indian Premier League team, Mumbai Indians, for nine seasons.

“Rhodes’ attachment to the Mumbai Indians squad will work in his favour. He know India well and knows how Indians function,” he said.

Rhodes changed the narrative around fielding after his awe-inspiring run-out of Pakistan team player, Inzamam-ul-Haq, during the 1992 Cricket World Cup. And though Indian fielding has remarkably improved in recent years, BCCI believes that their is still scope for improvement.

R Sridhar is the current fielding coach for India. Even though team India’s coaching body had their contracts expire at the recently concluded Cricket World Cup, they were given a 45-day extension by BCCI.
