Navjot Singh Sidhu resigns from Punjab cabinet

Mumbai: Senior Congress Party leader Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned from the state cabinet of Punjab, he announced on Twitter.

Sidhu posted the resignation letter on Twitter on Sunday. The letter, dated June 10 2019, is addressed to then Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who resigned early this month over his party's defeat in recent elections.
"I hereby resign as minister from the Punjab cabinet," reads Sidhu's resignation letter.

Sidhu on Sunday added that he would send the letter to Punjab's Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

Sidhu did not take charge of his new ministry after last month's cabinet reshuffle in Punjab in which he was assigned Power and New and Renewable Energy Sources Ministry. He previously held the portfolios for Local Government, Tourism and Cultural Affairs.

Reports said he was stripped of key portfolios in the cabinet reshuffle following a public fallout with Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

"Will be sending my resignation to the Chief Minister, Punjab," Sidhu wrote on Twitter ahead of posting his resignation letter.

Last month, Sidhu posted his picture with Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and another senior Congress party leader Ahmed Patel after meeting them in the capital New Delhi.

"Met the Congress president, handed him my letter, appraised him of the situation," he then wrote on Twitter.

Insiders said there was a growing rift between him and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh.

Congress performed relatively better in Punjab during the general elections, where they won eight of 13 seats.
