ROP issues advisory on how to avoid falling prey to car thieves

Muscat: Royal Oman Police has asked the public to help halt the rise in the number of cases of vehicle theft by not leaving their cars while the engine is running.
According to the police, such negligence by vehicle owners is a factor in many thefts.
An ROP spokesperson said: “A number of vehicle thefts took place when owners were busy shopping or using the ATM machines while leaving the engines of their vehicles on.”
The police have warned against such actions and advised the public to never leave vehicles running with the key in the ignition.
“Despite warnings from the ROP from time to time to avoid such unacceptable behaviour, we see cars left like this which only increases the issue of vehicle thefts.”
According to the police, as criminals sharpen their thieving skills, it is important for drivers to take sensible precautions.
Driver negligence in leaving the car running and leaving their vehicles unlocked are among the reasons behind the emergence of new tricks as the criminals now excel in choosing the right time for them to steal.
The ROP has called upon drivers to protect their vehicles from theft by installing safety measures.
“In case anyone witnesses a theft, he or she should report it the police immediately, at the nearest police station or through the hotline 9999.
