15 dead in India after flooding causes wall collapse

Pune: At least 15 people have died and several others sustained injuries after a portion of a wall collapsed near Talab Masjid in Kondhwa area of Pune, India.

Pune Police Commissioner K Venkatesham said, “Our team is investigating the reasons behind the incident. Firm action will be taken against those responsible. We will check whether proper permissions were taken and safety measures were followed.”

An official from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said the wall collapsed due to heavy downpour in the city.

"The wall collapsed at around 1:30 am on Saturday, due to heavy rainfall in Pune. The boundary wall was built near construction site sheds and when it collapsed, at least three sheds were complete bogged down under the wall. It collapsed at least six feet below the surface level," said Sadanand Gawde.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Saturday ordered an in-depth inquiry into the incident of wall collapse in Pune, in which 15 people were killed.

"Extremely saddened to know about loss of lives in the Kondhwa, Pune wall collapse incident. My deepest condolences to the families and praying for speedy recovery of the injured. Directed Pune Collector to conduct an in-depth enquiry,. Also, ₹5 lakh will be given to the kin of deceased in this incident," Fadnavis said on Twitter.

Indian National Congress leader, Dr. Nitin Raut tweeted: “My thoughts and prayers for all those who lost their lives in wall collapse in Pune. @CMOMaharashtra should provide compensations to all the victims and equally cross check the old dangerous constructions across the state.”

NCP leader Supriya Sule visited the incident site. “The Kondhwa accident saw the seriousness of construction workers' safety issue. @CMOMaharashtra Is there no value for the living beings of the building? Are they unemployed in the unorganized sector, so is the government ignoring their security? @PMCPune Should also take this incident seriously.”
