Muscat: A 140km section of the Adam-Haima-Thumrait dual carriageway was declared open by the Ministry Of Transport and Communications (MoTC) on Wednesday.
This includes a 20 kilometre long stretch of the first stage and another 120 kilometre stretch of the second stage.
With the opening of the new section, the total length of the Adam-Haima-Thumrait dual carriageway opened to traffic has gone up to 361 km out of the total length of 717.5 km.
“The inaugurated section includes 20km of the first part of the project, which is an extension of the part that was opened last month, and contains an underground tunnel to serve the Barakat area,” the Ministry of Transport and Communications said in a statement.
“The remaining 120 km is the length of the second part of the project, which starts from the Qurn Al Alam area to Saih Al Zamaim. It contains six underground tunnels to serve the areas on the road and an upper bridge at the intersection of the road to Wilayat of Mahout and Duqm Economic Zone.”
“The 140km stretch of the Adam-Haima-Thumrait dual carriageway project was opened on Wednesday, in the presence of Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport and a number of officials from the ministry,” the transport ministry announced.
The Adam-Thumrait highway is considered one of the major strategic projects implemented by the government. The road is expected to open for drivers by the start of the 2019 Khareef season.
The project provides two lanes separated by dividers on either side of the road for motorists on way to Salalah, an improvement upon the current road.
An official from the Ministry of Transport and Communications, “There is no doubt, that the Adam-Thumrait project will facilitate traffic and contribute to reducing the number of accidents on the road to Salalah.”
“However, ensuring that drivers follow the traffic rules and regulations is the best way to reduce traffic accidents,” he added.
