Narendra Modi appointed India's PM for second consecutive term

New Delhi: The President of India Ram Nath Kovind appointed Narendra Modi as Prime Minister after the landslide victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

Modi was appointed Prime Minister for a second consecutive term after NDA leaders elected him as their leader in parliament. Modi is expected to take the oath of office on 30 May.

A statement released by Kovind's office read, "Exercising powers vested in him under Article 75 (1) of the Constitution of India, the President, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, today appointed Shri Narendra Modi to the office of Prime Minister of India."

The president asked Modi to “advise him about the names of others to be appointed members of the Union Council of Ministers and indicate the date and time of the swearing-in-ceremony to be held at Rashtrapati Bhavan”.

Prior to Modi's appointment, an NDA delegation visited Kovind to give him a letter confirming Modi's appointment as their parliamentary leader. The NDA delegation was led by BJP President Amit Shah and included Prakash Singh Badal, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Uddhav Thackeray, Neiphiu Rio, and K Palaniswami among others.

Before his meeting with the president, Modi addressed members of the NDA at parliament’s Central Hall. He advised them to work for all Indians, empower minorities, shun VIP culture and to be humble.
