Washington: US President Donald Trump recently said he would increase tariffs on goods from China.
Crediting the tariffs he imposed on China with boosting America's economic performance, Trump stated in a tweet, "For 10 months, China has been paying Tariffs to the USA of 25 percent on 50 Billion Dollars of High Tech, and 10 percent on 200 Billion Dollars of other goods. These payments are partially responsible for our great economic results.
"The 10 percent will go up to 25 percent on Friday. 325 Billions Dollars of additional goods sent to us by China remain untaxed, but will be shortly, at a rate of 25 percent. The Tariffs paid to the USA have had little impact on product cost, mostly borne by China. The Trade Deal with China continues, but too slowly, as they attempt to renegotiate. No!"
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Monday that a delegation was still being sent to Washington as negotiations continued.
“As a matter of urgency, we still hope that the US and China will work together to move toward each other... to reach a mutually beneficial and win-win agreement,” Geng Shuang, a spokesman for the ministry said.
The ministry declined to confirm whether the country's chief negotiator Liu He would be attending.
According to the White House's Council of Economic Advisors (CEA), the unemployment rate in the US fell to 3.6 percent in April, the lowest it has been since December 1969. The achievement also marks the 14th consecutive month where the unemployment rate has been at or below 4 percent.
