Sharqiyah Expressway tunnels 80% finished

Muscat: The tunnels for the Sharqiyah Expressway have reached 80 percent completion, according to the Ministry of Transport and Communication.

A statement by the ministry read, “80 percent of the tunnels in the Sharqiyah Expressway have been completed. As for Nidab Tunnel, civil work and testing has been completed. Currently, electro-mechanic work and electrical work is being executed, as well as fire hazard and automation control work.

“The tunnels that are between 30-90 metres long have been fully completed," added the MOTC. "As for Al Uq tunnel, digging has been fully completed along with protection and rock stability work, and it is currently being padded with concrete.”

A special construction system was used for the first time in Oman to complete the bridges, which included using special cranes for bridge construction work, carrying units as heavy as 100 tonnes. Furthermore, 90,000 cubic metres of concrete were used in the bridges, in addition to 15,000 tonnes of iron.

These announcements came during a field visit that was carried out by Dr Ahmed al Futaisi, the Minister of Transport and Communications, earlier on Thursday morning

According to the ministry, “The minister inspected the work being done in tunnels and bridges at Wadi Al Uq, and also looked at the road that was changed to go away from the wadi in order to ensure traffic safety and reduce the distance commuters will need to travel when the road is opened.”

Earlier this year, in Febuary, Al Futaisi said in an online statement that traffic for the road between the Wilayats of Bidbid and Al Kamil should begin operations by the end of the year.
