Snap elections in Kazakhstan to be held in June

Nur-Sultan: Early Presidential elections in Kazakhstan will be held on 9 June, the country's interim President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced in a televised address.

"In accordance with the Constitution of the country, I have decided to hold early presidential elections on 9 June 2019," Tokayev said.

The decision was made after consulting former President Nursultan Nazarbayev and other senior officials, he added.

The elections, Tokayev said, are key to ensuring the implementation of the country's social and economic goals.

He stated, "As head of state, I guarantee that the election will be clean, transparent, and fair!"

Tokayev took office on 20 March following the surprise resignation of Nazarbayev, who ruled the Central Asian state for three decades.
