Muscat: Muscat-based go-karting champion Shonal Kunimal became the overall champion in 2018 / 2019 season of Rotax Max Challenge Championship in Bambino class after the 8th and final round of the RMC by securing the highest points 682 on March 29-30 at Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
This is a great victory for Shonal as it was the back to back consecutive success as Overall Champion title for the seven-year-old Indian School Ghubra International (ISG-i) student. The Yas Marina Circuit is most commonly associated with hosting the Formula One Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but last weekend the iconic track welcomed the region’s finest kart drivers by staging the UAE Rotax Max Challenge Championship.
The UAE Rotax Max Challenge the UAE’s most competitive karting competition was held over 8 rounds spread over the Al Ain Raceway, Dubai Kartdrome, Abu Dhabi’s Al Forsan Sports Club, Muscat Speedway of Oman Automobile Association, and Yas Marina Circuit in Abudhabi. The event at Yas Marina Circuit was comprised of two days races for the final, 8th round of championship having a total of 6 time-trails.
On Friday 29th 3 time-trails and Saturday 30th March another 3 time-trails, and is due to take place on a specially designed layout, located around the North Circuit of the Yas Marina Circuit. The final round was competitive between the five drivers, as the first time-trail win by Greek boy Leonidas Peruzzi, meanwhile, the 2nd time-trial was win by Maxim Bobreshow. But 3rd and 4th time-trial have been won by Shonal Kunimal, 5th time-trail taken by Zak Sowerby and 6th time-trail win by Omani driver Adam Awan. Shonal thanked Sulaiman Al-Rawahi who is the Managing Director of OAA (Oman Automobile Association) who encourages and supports the young talents to come up.
