Muscat: With over 2 billion views, the 'Baby Shark Dance' is one of YouTube's most popular videos, watched by children and their families around the world.
The hit song and dance are the brain child of Pinkfong, the children's edutainment brand of the South Korean educational entertainment company SmartStudy.
The song's origins go back decades, but a version released by Pinkfong sparked a dance craze that has spread like wildfire.
And since its release in 2016, the viral hit has gone beyond the realm of YouTube. 'The Best of Baby Shark', an album that includes the song and its many variants is currently the #1 song in the Billboard 100's children's category. The song itself debuted at #32 on the chart in January.
According to the Billboard 100, the song first went viral in Indonesia before spreading around the world. It made its first appearance on the Streaming Songs chart in November 2018. Driven by strong streaming sales, the song has continued to perform well in the U.S. and elsewhere. It spawned one of the most enduring dance crazes, the Baby Shark Challenge.
Its views, which currently stand at 2,518,902,970, put it among the top 30 most watched videos on YouTube. And with kids across the world continuing to discover and re-listen to the song, the viral hit shows no signs of going away anytime soon.
