Tokyo: The Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) has unveiled the official sports pictograms of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.
Pictograms play a key role in facilitating the experience of athletes and spectators alike and will be used for a variety of purposes, including signage at competition venues, decoration around the Japanese capital and on licensed products, posters and tickets, as well as in guidebooks.
Created by Japanese designer Masaaki Hiromura, the pictograms embody the uniqueness and athleticism of each sport, and highlight the dynamism of athletes. They were designed in line with Tokyo 2020’s theme 'Innovation from Harmony', while drawing inspiration from the Olympic Games Tokyo 1964, when pictograms were first introduced at the Olympics. Hiromura led a team of designers on the project, which took almost two years to complete. With 33 sports on the Tokyo 2020 programme, some sports have more than one pictogram, totaling 50 designs all together. Hiromura said, “It is a real honour to have participated in the design of the Tokyo 2020 sports pictograms. I have tried to express the dynamic beauty of the athletes through these pictograms, while respecting the legacy bequeathed by the pioneers of the Japanese design industry in their designs for the Tokyo 1964 Games. I hope that these pictograms will inspire everyone and help generate excitement for the different sports at Tokyo 2020.”
