Madrid: Real Madrid crashed out of the UEFA Champions League in shocking fashion with a 1-4 defeat to Ajax in the second leg of the Round of 16 on Tuesday at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid.
The result earned the Dutch side a 3-5 win on aggregate and concluded a nightmare week for Los Blancos.
In the span of six days, Real’s Copa del Rey, La Liga and Champions League hopes all ended with home defeats, thus ending Real’s three-year reign as kings of Europe.
Simply put; Ajax were superb. The visitors were technically and tactically superior, with Dusan Tadic and David Neres leading the way in a breathtaking display of football that evoked memories of Ajax’s dominant teams of the early 1990s. Real certainly did not lack for chances, but the defence did itself no favours and the absence of Sergio Ramos on the back-line was sorely felt, the Spanish MARCA newspaper reported. -ONA
