Municipality installs new pedestrian walkway, cycle lane in Muscat

Muscat: Muscat Municipality is constructing pedestrians’ walkways in Amerat as part of a programme to beautify the governorate.
According to municipality officials, the walkway in Al Mahaj area of Amerat is 1.7 km long and 4 metres wide, with two lanes — one dedicated for pedestrians, and the others to be used as a cycling lane.
In a statement put out by the municipality, authorities said they were implementing "developmental projects that serve all members of the society" and "keep pace with the modern urban and architectural development".
"In this regard, the Municipality, represented by the General Directorate of Muscat Municipality in Amerat, constructed pedestrians walkway at Mahaj area, which is adjacent to Amerat Park, which is 1,700 metres long and 4 metres wide," Muscat Municipality said.
Issa Bin Salem Al Riyami, Head of General Directorate of Muscat Municipality in Amerat said: "The project aims to enhance the practice of walking and cycling. Amerat is not like the rest of the governorate that enjoy beaches. We have to look at alternatives for the residents to exercise."
He added that the company operating the project has completed 75 per cent of the project.
"One of the walk is paved with interlock tiles, and the other track was dedicated to cycling activity in asphalt, with 59 lighting poles. A number of trees and plants will be planted to add aesthetic that give it more vitality," he further said.
