Muscat: U.S. President Donald Trump ended the longest government shutdown in his nation's history as he continues to battle Democrats for funding for a border wall on America's southern border with Mexico.
Trump said, "If we don’t get a fair deal from Congress, the Government will either shutdown on February 15th again — or I will use the powers afforded to me under the laws and the Constitution of the United States to address this emergency. We will have great security."
The move, according to Trump, is temporary and will be followed by negotiations with Democrats over funding for his border wall. While Democrats baulked at his demands and Trump refused to back down, hundreds of thousands of federal employees were forced to work without pay.
Trump tweeted about ending the shutdown, "I wish people would read or listen to my words on the Border Wall. This was in no way a concession. It was taking care of millions of people who were getting badly hurt by the Shutdown with the understanding that in 21 days, if no deal is done, it’s off to the races!"
"21 days goes very quickly. Negotiations with Democrats will start immediately. Will not be easy to make a deal, both parties very dug in. The case for National Security has been greatly enhanced by what has been happening at the Border & through dialogue. We will build the Wall!"
