Malaysia elects new king

Muscat: Malaysia has elected its new king, authorities have announced.
Al Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah of Pahang was selected to serve as the 16th king of the country's rotating monarchy. Tan Sri Syed Danial Syed Ahmad, Keeper of the Ruler's Seal, confirmed that the new king, known in Malay as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, will begin his five-year term on 31 January 2019.
“The Prime Minister has also been informed,” he said.
The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, was also selected as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Malaysia selects its monarch by ballot during a Conference of Rulers where all its constitutional rulers vote.
The election of the new King was held following the unprecedented resignation of Sultan Muhammad V, the Sultan of Kelantan, as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong on 6 January 2019.
The special meeting of the Conference of Rulers, which was chaired by the Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin, was attended by eight of the country's nine Malay rulers. Sultan Muhammad V of Kelantan did not attend the meeting.
