NRIs to get chip-based e-passport system soon

Muscat: Non-Resident Indians living in Oman and other overseas countries will soon be able to apply for chip-based e-passports, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced.
The new system will help centralise all passport-related queries, and is part of the Government of India’s plan to simplify all social security-based procedures, including passports, visas, and PIO (Person of Indian Origin) and OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cards.
"Our embassies and consulates are being linked to the passport service project worldwide," said PM Modi. "This will get you ready for a centralised system connected to the passport service for everyone. Rather than moving one step forward, this chip-based system is also working towards issuing e-Passports.
"The government is trying to simplify all of the procedures on your social security, including passports, visas, PIO and OCI cards," added Modi. "For expat Indians a few months ago a new step has also been raised. Passport-related visa rules are also being simplified. The convenience of e-visas have been saving you time and also reduced your troubles. There are still steps for its improvement if there are any problems with it."
A big part of Modi's push during his mandate as Prime Minister has been to be more inclusive in the participation of NRIs and those of Indian origin towards contributing in the development of the country. It is part of his plan to develop a 'New India', which intends to focus on more original research and development as well as scientific discoveries.
"In this India, you can play a big role in research and development, and innovation," said Modi, addressing NRIs. "The government is also trying to bring India's start-ups and NRI mentors together, on one platform. The defence manufacturing sector can also be key for you.
He added, "I have also said earlier on this forum, I want to reiterate that wherever you live in the country, motivate at least five families around you to come to India. Your efforts will play to increase tourism in the country."
