Muscat: Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, daughter of Sonia Gandhi former president of the Indian National Congress, has made a formal entry into Indian politics.
The daughter of late Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi, Priyanka has been appointed as the All-Indian Congress Committee's (AICC) General Secretary in Uttar Pradesh east, months before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the party has confirmed.
The appointment was announced on Twitter in a communiqué by Ashok Gehlot, Congress party's National General Secretary.
According to Gehlot, Congress President Rahul Gandhi appointed "Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as AICC General Secretary for Uttar Pradesh East. She will be taking charge with effect on (the) first week of February 2019."
This will be Vadra's first official political role within the party.
Additionally, Ghulam Nabi Azad, who was the AICC General Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, was appointed AICC General Secretary of Haryana. K.C. Venugopal will also be taking over the post of AICC General Secretary.
