Muscat: Omani and expat youth accounted for 39 per cent of all crimes committed in the Sultanate in 2017, according to data from the country's statistics agency.
The National Centre for Statistics and Information has issued a report containing the indicators and characteristics of Omani youth. It presents their demographic, educational status and the extent of their participation in the labour market, as well as some social security indicators for 2017 compared to the years before.
According to the report, the total number of offenders in the Sultanate was 20,800, of which youth aged between 18 and 29 years represented 39 per cent of all crimes committed. A total of 4,065 Omani youths committed crimes last year.
Crimes against individuals accounted for the highest percentage of crimes committed by young offenders at 28 per cent, followed by crimes related to money at 27 per cent.
The research also showed that 74 per cent of all the job seekers in the Sultanate were between the ages of 15-29. Males comprise 37 per cent, while females account for 63 per cent of young Omanis who were seeking jobs in 2017.
As for the number of victims of road accidents in 2017, there were 3,774 victims 460 deaths and 3,134 injuries. The youth also accounted for 28 per cent of all road accident deaths and 32 per cent of all accident injuries. Additionally, males accounted for 81 per cent of all the casualties.
