Ten expats arrested in fake phone message scam in Oman

Muscat: A total of 10 expats have been arrested in Muscat on charges of fraud, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) has announced.
Officials said that the accused had sent victims messages on their phones. The messages would urge people to click on a link and when they did so, the perpetrators would fraudulently obtain credit card details. The arrests were made following an operation by the General Department of Criminal Investigation.
An official from the Royal Oman Police (ROP) said, “The Investigation and Anti-Crime department of Muscat managed to arrest ten Asians who indulged in electronic fraud by contacting people and deceiving them by asking victims to open a link they sent via phones. Once the victims clicked the links, the culprits obtained their credit card details.”
ROP also called on citizens and residents to protect themselves by ignoring any potentially malicious accounts, emails and phone calls they receive.
