Muscat: At a cost of more than OMR300,000, Salalah Municipality opened the first pedestrian bridge in Dhofar Governorate to improve safety in one of the busiest areas in Salalah city.
The bridge is 65 metres long and 2.4 metres wide, according to officials, and cost OMR378,900 to build. The bridge is equipped with stairs, an elevator, a slope for trolleys and wheelchair access for people with special needs on both ends of the bridge, as well as parking places.
According to Dhofar Municipality: “The pedestrian bridge in Al Ribat Road, which is located in a vital part of the city — in front of the Salalah Court Complex — was constructed to facilitate pedestrians from both sides of the road.”
“The bridge will serve visitors and employees of government agencies along the street,” the municipality added.
Adnan Dheesh, a local from Salalah, said: “Citizens and residents are happy with the bridge because it will help the court’s employees and visitors, commercial centre customers, and many other institutions on that road.”
Dheesh added, “The bridge will reduce accidents on Al Ribat street. In the past, we witnessed many accidents when people attempted to cross the road, which resulted in many deaths and injuries.”
“This project is part of a series of projects implemented by the municipality in the field of roads and traffic safety requirements to avoid and reduce accidents in the area,” the municipality official added.
The municipality is also making efforts to improve and rehabilitate roads, speed breakers at Salalah intersections, and expand roads and shoulders to contribute to the flow of traffic, in an effort to support joint action between the municipality and the Royal Oman Police to reduce road accidents and injuries.
