Muscat: The 15th Annual Walkathon, larger than in the past, is being held in Muscat on October 30, and officials anticipate participation by 10,000 people this year.
Organised by the Oman Cancer Association (OCA), the purpose of the walkathon is to raise funds to combat cancer in Oman and raise awareness about cancer.“Once again, it is the time of the year to share part of our day with our cancer patients, survivors and their families by joining the OCA Annual Walkathon. Let us engage with them and assure them that we are all with them, and let us create aN atmosphere for creating awareness about all cancers,” said Dr. Wahid Al Kharusi, President OCA.
Al Kharusi previously said that when they held the walkathon for the first time some 15 years ago, about 274 people participated. It has continued to grow each year and saw a participation of 8,000 residents and citizens in 2017, while 10,000 are expected this year.Al Kharusi has urged participants to bring their children to the walkathon this year, which will help remove the taboo surrounding the word cancer.
“Bring your children and let them have fun and enjoy the children’s corner, and at the same time expose them to the word cancer and remove the stigma surrounding it,” he added.
The theme for this year’s walkathon is 'I care'. The two km walk will be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 from 4 pm to 6 pm at Qurum Municipal Park.
