Muscat Municipality to crack the whip on litterbugs

Muscat: A fine of OMR1,000 will be imposed on anyone who litters in a wadi or a desert, according to the Muscat Municipality.
The municipality has carried out a number of campaigns to raise awareness among the community about the dangers of waste in certain areas.
There are various types of waste that the municipality looks at, including household waste, construction waste, agricultural waste, coastal waste, and waste in parks.
According to the administrative decision No. 55/2017, “All those who dispose of waste in places other than the assigned areas shall be fined OMR100.”
With regards to dumping waste in open spaces, “a fine of OMR1,000 will be imposed on anyone who litters in fenced, open spaces or in the wadis”. The municipal law will also impose a fine of OMR50 on those who “throw rubble, trees, loose furniture and large equipment near waste collection containers”.
Individuals are also prohibited from disposing of animal bodies or fertilizers in public places and garbage collection containers, which can attract a fine of OMR100. On the other hand, the decision will also fine businesses OMR100 for “not removing construction waste or dumping it in public places”.
In all cases, the fine will be doubled if the offence is repeated, and additionally, the individual will be given one day to dispose of the waste appropriately.
In order to push forward this campaign, the municipality has begun its plan to intensify its inspection on businesses and construction contractors to avoid the dumping of random waste.
