Fibroid is the name given to two different types of tumour — uterine fibroids and fibroma. Uterine fibroids grow in a woman’s uterus or womb whereas fibroma may occur on nerves, ovaries and many other parts of the body.
Also unlike fibroma, uterine fibroid symptoms may not show up at all in a woman’s lifetime. Both the types are benign or non-cancerous. Fibroids may occur in clusters or as a single tumour. The possibility of getting fibroids increases as a woman progresses in age. Heavy fibroid growth bulges the tummy and gives the woman a pregnant look.

The symptoms of fibroids are:
1. A bulging tummy which is tight and hard to touch
2. Abnormal bowel movements
3. Sharp or dull ache in lower abdomen
4. Strong painful spasms in the area of uterus
5. Abnormal bleeding during menses
6. Back pain
7. Bleeding after menopause
8. Frequent urination or difficulty in emptying bladder
9. Frequent urinary tract infections
10. Complication in pregnancy or labour

Home remedies
1. Heat castor oil and apply on the abdomen area. This will ease the pain and discomfort caused by fibroid.
2. Gently massage abdomen with lavender essential oil. This relieves the blood congestion and fibroid pain.
3. Drink lot of fluids. Take fresh fruit juices but strictly avoid black tea and carbonated beverages.
4. Drink herbal tea made from herbs like milk thistle, dandelion, burdock or vitex.
5. Fill your bathtub with warm water and sit in it for half an hour. This will soothe the discomfort. Application of hot water bottle or heat pad on lower abdomen also helps a lot.
6. Avoid red meat, sugar, processed food, food with additives and saturated fat.
7. Consume fibre rich food items like whole grain bread, oats, brown rice, etc. This will remove the excess oestrogen from your system.
8. Be on an organic diet.
9. Consume phytoestrogenic diet. Chickpeas, soy, lentils, alfalfa, red clover, etc are rich in phytoestrogen. They help to get rid of excess oestrogen by by-passing the oestrogen binding.
10. Drink 2 litres of filtered water each day.
11. Dark leafy vegetables are good to treat fibroid problem.
12. Do not take alcohol or caffeine.
