Oman's Sur College of Applied Sciences hosts food safety exhibition

Sur: Students of Public Relations at the Sur College of Applied Sciences organised a food safety exhibition and cookery competition as a part of an awareness campaign called ‘Thuluthn Lethaamik’ on the college campus recently.
Inaugurated by Dr. Ahmed Al Riyami, dean of the college, the campaign aims to raise awareness about food safety and wastage.
The major participants of the exhibition are the Omani Women's Association Sur, Oman India Fertilizer Company (OMIFCO), Diet Nutrition Centre Sur, Indian School Sur, Ahmed bin Majid School, Oman Medical College, Muscat Holiday Resorts, along with the Sultan Qaboos University and the Department of Applied Biotechnology at College of Applied Sciences Sur.
The exhibition displayed various themes related to food safety and wastage. Pesticides in food, nutrients and preservatives, water quality, food allergies, organic food were some of the key themes on display.
“We participated in this campaign to raise awareness about food safety. Also, we wish to offer some suggestions about reducing food wastage. The highlight of the exhibition is the diversity of topics discussed, based on the theme of the campaign, said Omar Al Araimi, an employee from OMIFCO.
Another attraction of the exhibition is the “Children Corner” to build awareness through education and fun games, to which children from nearby schools have been invited.
A media centre at the exhibition venue will distribute informative flyers on food safety and wastage. A cookery competition held as a part of this event will have 10 teams competing in the competition. A judging panel of four food experts will evaluate the results. The competition is aimed at spreading awareness among students about safety measures during food preparation.
The campaign ‘thulthnlethaamik’ translated into ‘one-third for food’ is a part of a public relations practice course taught at the college.
