Four Gulf nationals handed community service for drifting

Muscat: Four Gulf nationals were sentenced to community service for reckless driving, the second time the courts in Oman have ordered community service for convicted offenders.
Salalah Primary Court had recently sentenced the accused to three months in jail and fined the four men OMR500 for performing drifting stunts on greenery areas in Salalah.
The court also ordered that the men not be allowed to enter the country for three years after the completion of their sentences, as well as having their vehicles confiscated.
Adding to their original sentence, the defendants have been ordered to work on a farm in Salalah for four hours every day for three months, under the supervision of the Public Prosecution and the Royal Oman Police (ROP).
An official at the Public Prosecution told the Times of Oman that this was the second time the courts had ordered community service sentences this year.
The video of the drifting on green landscapes in Salalah recently went viral on social media platforms.
Drivers who perform drifting stunts on roads can face jail terms of up to three months and be fined up to OMR500, per Article 42 of the traffic law.
Article 57 of the new Omani Penal Code provides supplementary penalties, including being ordered to participate in social service work.
In addition, a convict can be jailed for an additional month if he does not complete the public service sentence.
In February, the same court issued a first-of-its-kind community service sentence to a number of defendants when the court sentenced convicts to sweep and clean roads in Salalah for four hours a day for one month, in addition to serving their original sentence.
