Muscat: Companies are not bound to pay June salaries before the Eid Al Fitr holidays begin this year, an official at the Ministry of Manpower has clarified.
The ministry official said: "There is no ministerial decision to set the date for the payment of salaries to employees at companies this Eid. It depends on the companies if they are willing to pay or not. We have nothing to do with that as for now," he said.
Last year, Minister of Manpower, Abdullah Al Bakri, issued a decision asking private companies to pay salaries of their employees by June 20, as per the provisions of the Labour Law. The decision was issued to allow citizens and residents to make preparations for Eid al Fitr.
A deadline for salaries for public sector employees for the month of June has not yet been issued this year either. "It is better to not pay salary before Eid because it is so early, then people will have to go 40 days without pay. But some people had planned to spend their June salary on Eid requirements," a citizen said.
