Mawaleh central market gears up to meet Eid rush

Muscat: Preparations for Eid Al Fitr have been completed at the Mawaleh Central Market, Muscat Municipality has revealed.
The municipality explained that such preparations included increased imports, as well as maintainance of proper hygiene, and checking pesticide levels in fruits and vegetables.
“Various companies which operate in the market, are in agreement to double direct imports from countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, Iran, South Africa and Egypt, and to increase the number of shipments to the market to meet the needs of local consumers," the municipality said.
“The market received 1,047 truckloads of 20,940 tonnes of vegetables and fruits between May 17 and June 5.”
Government agencies, such as the Royal Oman Police, represented by the General Administration of Customs, as well as the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, would overlook farm products in the market.
The agencies would also ensure the arrival of goods without delay after inspecting the quality and safety of products.
Moreover, inspection teams have destroyed 158 tonnes of fruits and vegetables at the market.
The Mawaleh Central Market management has set its working hours for the Eid Al Fitr period, opening between 4.30am and 11pm, from June 11 to June 14.
