Singapore: The U.S.- North Korea summit scheduled for Singapore next week just took on a touch of glamour.
The White House announced on Tuesday, June 5 that talks between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un will be held on the southern island of Sentosa. What used to be an old pirate hangout today is a millionaire's playground.
It's an easy drive - or cable car ride - from the city, boasting swanky resorts and quiet beaches, a huge water park, and for visitors chasing thrills a Universal Studios as well. Sentosa may be a holiday hotspot, but experts say security won't be a problem at the proposed venue - Capella Hotel.
Senior Fellow at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, Malcolm Cook said, " Capella being on Sentosa, a resort Island, makes it easier to cut off without disrupting the rest of Singapore. And even on Sentosa island Capella's location is separate from most of the other hotels as well so you could really create a safe space for the summit to happen without creating much disruption at all and I'm sure Capella would be very happy to have it there."
Singapore is also taking extra precautions by tightening checks within a special zone and banning things like public address systems and remotely-piloted aircraft.
Donald Trump has called the summit a "very important couple of days". He and his team will be working to persuade Kim to shut down his nuclear programme, which has developed weapons capable of hitting the United States.
The summit will be the first meeting between a serving U.S. president and a North Korean leader.
