Majlis call to assess losses from cyclone Mekunu

Muscat: A statement on the adverse weather conditions that affected the Governorates of Dhofar and Al Wusta was made by Mohammed bin Musalam Hubais, member of the economic and financial committee of Majlis Al Shura on Monday.
Musalam Hubais called for forming a ministerial committee with broad powers to assess the losses caused by the cyclone. He called for providing wider protection for the plant cover.
The members stressed the importance of forming a ministerial committee having the necessary power to assess the losses caused by the tropical Cyclone ‘Mekunu’.
They also called for reconsidering the fees for the environmental permits, such as licences for factories. They noted that some factories were shut down due to high fees imposed on them. They also called for full exemption of the fees for the environmental activities. The Minister replied by saying that cancelled fees may not be considered at the current time.
During its 22nd session of the third annual sitting for the 8th term under Majlis Al Shura Chairman Khalid bin Hilal Al Maawali, the statement of Mohammed bin Salim Al Toobi, Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs was discussed.
The statement of the Minister of Environment and Climate Affairs included six main themes that covered the development of the environment and climate sector, training and rehabilitation of national cadres, coordination with the agencies involved in environmental work, the environmental licences, the international conventions on environment and the relation of the Ministry with civil society organisations.
The members proposed to specify certain locations for dumping farm wastes .
