Guatemala: At least two dozen people have been killed after a volcano erupted in Guatemala.
Hundreds were injured when the Fuego volcano a name that means 'fire' in Spanish erupted on Sunday, June 3.
One survivor, Consuelo Hernandez, described a harrowing escape, "Not everyone got away. I think they were buried. We saw the lava was pouring through the corn fields and we all ran up a hill nearby to escape."
Rescuers went door to door looking for victims after Fuego spewed a five mile stream of red hot lava and a plume of ash around the capital, Guatemala city.
It's the biggest eruption of Fuego in more than forty years. But the volcano has become more active this year, and this is its second eruption since January.
Thousands of people have been evacuated so far by the country's emergency services.
In an address to the country, Guatemala's President called the eruption a national emergency. Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said, "We will suggest the need to call for a state of emergency. Up to now we think it's been a disaster in at least three areas."
Fuego is only 25 miles south-west of the country's capital.
Emergency services say all of the dead were concentrated in three towns nearby. Guatemala city's airport has also been closed over safety concerns after ash from the volcano began falling on the runway. Officials say the Volcano still presented a danger and continued lava flows were still possible.
