Omani elected as Middle East head of petroleum geology group

Muscat: For the first time ever, an Omani, Dr. Salim bin Ali Al Mahrouqi, has been elected as the chairman of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) in the Middle East.
As the first Omani to hold this regional position Dr. Salim bin Ali Al Mahrouqi, Director General of Mineral Investments Affairs at the General Authority for Mining, was elected Chairman of AAPG in the Middle East in Dubai and a member of its Advisory Council in the United States.
The American Association of Petroleum Geologists is the world's largest professional association of Earth Sciences, with 29,000 members from 129 countries and six regional offices around the world.
This organisation deals with the advancement of geology. The organisation conducts specialised competitions, notably the regional and international competition, the "Imperial Barrel Award", in which Sultan Qaboos University was ranked third on the international level several times.
