Oman Majlis Al Shura panel for economic crisis management system

Muscat: A crisis management system should be established to avoid the consequences of an economic crisis before it occurs, the Shura Council’s Special Committee for dealing with economic crises said in a press release.
This proposal was put forward on Tuesday during a meeting of the Special Committee, which hosted businessmen, as well as heads and members of associations, including the Mining Association and Contractors’ Association.
Those at the meeting noted that actions following crises should be handled effectively by means of a crisis management system, while quickly introducing measures to curb the social and economic effects on society.
The Committee stressed the importance of focusing on the tourism, fisheries and mining sectors to support the Omani economy and serve as an alternative source of state income, in addition to rationing non-necessary expenditures and limiting the direct effect on citizens.
The measures that have been taken since the end of last year were quick solutions, as there were expectations that there would be a temporary crisis and oil prices would recover. Now, with the crisiscontinuing, this sheds light on the importance of creating alternative sectors in Oman.
The Committee also discussed the role of the private sector in employing Omani job seekers, in light of the current economic crisis, the Omanisation rate in companies, as well as raising the Omanisation rate. Further, the Committee discussed reasons for the dismissal of employees in some sectors and creating a balance between the rate of employment of nationals and the level of productivity in organizations.
The attendees noted that the increase in the number of expatriate workers versus the decrease in the number of Omani nationals working raises a number of questions about productivity within society.
