Times tech review: Microsoft Surface Laptop

You wouldn’t think you’d be able to have heavy-duty fun from such a light-weight laptop, but that’s where you’re wrong.

Whether you’re an avid gamer, voracious movie buff or focused business executive, Microsoft’s latest laptop features plenty of tech to keep everyone happy. Microsoft has listened to comments and feedback from users of previous versions of the Surface Pro, and it is quite clear that they’ve taken this very seriously.

The new Microsoft Surface Laptop has come to Oman and is now available to buy in stores and online. It features the latest tech upgrades to ensure buyers of the new laptop get plenty of value for their money.

Although Microsoft seems to have built this computer with the less-is-more adage, there is nothing minimalist about what’s under the cover. You wouldn’t think that such a light laptop would be able to pack such a punch, but as they always say, never judge a book by its cover.

That Microsoft has managed to accommodate a much larger battery – it’s 20% larger than the previous version – and becomes doubly impressive when you consider that its Intel i5 Core comes with no fan, with its revamped ventilation being good enough to handle the heat.

But the Surface Laptop doesn’t just look good, it performs well, too: Microsoft’s i7 CPU clocks in at 2.5GHz, upgradable to 4GHz with TurboBoost, and the dual core processor is complemented by an impressive 16 gigabytes of RAM, along with the rather solid Intel Iris Plus 640 graphics card. Whether you’re using it at home, in your office, in the skies or on the road, the Surface’s 13.5 inch screen is more than capable of holding its own at any altitude.

With a very decent 512GB of storage space – how they can accommodate so much with so little room to spare is truly a wonder, but kudos to Microsoft – and USB ports and microSD card readers to boot, the Surface Pro ensures that you are always taken care of, as does its low emission Bluetooth capability feature.

The nifty little laptop isn’t just designed for function, either – form has been very thoughtfully incorporated into this nice doo-dad. The workspace of the laptop features a lovely Alcantara type cover, a tough yet comfortable surface on which the keyboard sits, with the latter also been given a bit more punch, so it actually feels like you’re on a real one. Not bad, considering all of these bits and bobs have been accommodated into just one-third of an inch of thickness. The laptop comes in a variety of cool colours – platinum, cobalt blue, burgundy, and black are the options on offer.

It’s only natural to miss your loved ones (or so we think, we do come across people who don’t, from time to time), and the urge to reconnect with them is often strong. A human touch seems to be at the epicentre of this new laptop, which features an eight megapixel rear-facing autofocus camera, and a front-facing five megapixel camera for good measure.

All in all, the new Microsoft Surface Laptop is an affordable, excellent PC that should be part of anyone’s arsenal, whether gamer, geek or genius. The laptop is available to purchase in stores and online in Oman.
