Muscat: Dhofar Municipality seized and destroyed a total of 13,512 tonnes of damaged or unfit foodstuffs in February, 2018, including 85 tonnes of damaged onions in Salalah, according to a report by the authority.
A statement from the municipality read, "The municipality conducted 1,630 inspection visits during the last month in Salalah. These visits targeted food shops, cafes, restaurants and shopping malls in order to make sure that they abide by the rules and regulations of providing healthy food."
In its report, the municipality revealed that during these inspection visits, 35 shops were closed for violating health laws, while 835 were given warnings and 38 were handed fines were recorded.
The municipality added, "About 13,512 tonnes and 2,822.5 litres of unfit foodstuffs and drinks were destroyed." This included 85 tonnes of damaged onions.
