Akumal: An Iowa family of four was found dead inside a condo in Akumal, Mexico, a small coastal resort about an hour south of Cancun.
But local authorities and a family member said on Friday - that there were no signs of violence or foul play. After 41-year-old Kevin Sharp, his wife Amy, and their children did not return as planned from their week-long vacation - family members in Creston Iowa went to the police.
Paul Vermeer, Creston Police Chief said, "They wanted to file a missing persons report since they were supposed to go to a basketball game in Indiana and never made it."
Mexican authorities are investigating what went wrong, with some speculating there could have been a gas leak in the condo.
Paul Vermeer added, "At this time, autopsies are being conducted in Mexico. Results are pending." Although Mexican tourism officials are portraying the deaths as an isolated incident, the tragedy does raise concerns about the overall safety of tourists in Mexico, with an estimated 20 million Americans visiting Mexico last year.
