Muscat: Famous Palestinian singer, composer and songwriter Rim Banna has died after battling cancer for almost nine years.
Rim Banna, who was known for her nationalist songs, died at the age of 51 in her hometown, Nazareth. She was also the daughter of a well-known Palestinian poet Zuhaira Sabbagh.
The artist, who was diagnosed in 2009 with breast cancer, lost the ability to sing two years ago but continued to compose and create music.

Banna's fans have taken up to all social media accounts passing heart-felt condolences to her family members – mother, brother and three children – from all parts of the world, grieving the death of the iconic singer.
“She taught us how to fight and how to love, after a long way fighting the occupation and cancer, now and only now she will rest in peace. Peace be upon your beautiful soul,” a fan from Egypt wrote on Twitter.
Another fan from Qatar wrote: “Never have I once captured an artist that has encapsulated moments of strength and unity as much as this soul has done to nations, to humans, that have nothing to hold on to for survival other than the motivations that are brought in one day at a time.”
The Palestinian Ministry of Culture honoured Banna's prolific musical and artistic legacy, naming her Cultural Personality of the Year 2016.
