Muscat: Flying the first passenger aircraft at the new Muscat International Airport is an honour, said Captain Hafidh Hamed Salim Al Khatri.

Al Khatri was one of the pilots on board Oman Air flight WY 2001, the first trial flight to take off from the new airport, which is currently undergoing airport readiness trials.

"Actually, this is the day we have been waiting for, for a long time, to start the new airport in the new building, and we are really proud to start one of the biggest projects in Oman," he said, speaking exclusively to Times of Oman.

He added, "Today, it was the first flight as a trial flight and it went very well, and I am the first pilot on Oman Air and my colleague captain Khamis, to operate this flight. The flight was short, about 10 minutes in the air to come back, the ground staff and all support of the aircraft done a good job within time and everything was done smoothly. We are looking forward to the day the airport to be open for public, which will soon be open in the first quarter of the next year 2018."

The airport is expected to be opened to the public in April 2018.
