Award-winning dancer to perform in Oman

Muscat: Lovers of Indian dance in Oman will surely be looking forward to the visit of one of the subcontinent’s most accomplished dancers.
Chitra Visweswaran, who is considered by many to be a legend in the field of Bharatanatyam, a traditional Indian dance form, will be arriving in Muscat for a one-night-only exclusive performance at The Grand Hall in Al Falaj Hotel, on November 9.
The performance, which is titled Meera – The Soul Divine, and features Visweswaran and her finest protégés, is sure to enthrall those who have a passion for the performing arts in Oman. The Indian Social Club in the Sultanate have been instrumental in bringing her here, and Dr. Sathish Nambiar, the Chairman of the ISC, is keen to see her perform on Thursday evening.
“Ms. Chitra Visweswaran is a doyen of the Indian classical dances, and not only is she skilled in Bharatanatyam, but other dances as well, so this is a great opportunity for all art lovers and dance aficionados in Oman to come and see such an accomplished person,” said Nambiar, speaking to the Times of Oman.
“This is not the first time she has come to Oman, and her performance was very well received the last time as well, but we are lucky to get her this time, because she also has on her schedule a performance in Bahrain, before she then heads to the UK,” he added. “There is a lot that budding dancers in Oman can learn from her exquisite performances and I invite all those who are keen to see her perform live to join us on the day.”
Visweswaran has received a host of awards from both Indian and foreign governments for her contribution to the field of dance: in addition to being conferred the coveted Padma Shri award from the government of India in 1992, she has also received the Japan Foundation Award for Excellence, and has been made an honorary citizen of the city of Bourges in France.
Fuelled by a desire to pursue her passions and an innate love for the performing arts, Visweswaran’s work deals extensively towards the extension of the existing field of Bharatanatyam dance, with her performances covering thematic solos, group dances and theatre production, all of which reflect a synergy of tradition and innovation.
She is also the president of the Association of Bharatanatyam Artistes of India (ABHAI), and her latest work – Meera – is a production that looks at life from the perspective of a spiritual journey, rather than a historical one, with the music for the event being scored by famed singer Jayashri Ramnath.
Art patrons and dance enthusiasts can collect their tickets for Visweswaran’s performance at the Indian Social Club in person, after reserving them over the phone, by calling 24703263. Please note that all tickets will only be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
