Muscat: The National Heart Center (NHC) at the Royal Hospital received 38,987 patients and performed 4,856 cardio-catheter and 900 heart surgeries for adults and children during 2016.
The Royal Hospital has also organised an exhibition to celebrate International Heart Day, running until September 29, where visitors can receive a free check-up.
The event aims to increase heart health awareness among community members as well as raising awareness on cardiovascular diseases (CVD), causes, and prevention methods.
The event included various activities that provided health information for individuals on the risks of CVD and strokes, highlighting the significance of adopting healthy lifestyles and practicing exercises in order to avoid risks of heart diseases.
"World Heart Day is a truly global event that sees individuals, families, communities, organisations and governments around the world take part in activities to take charge of their heart health and that of others. It has the power to unite people from all countries and backgrounds in the fight against the CVD burden, and inspires and drives international action to encourage heart-healthy living across the world," the World Heart Federation reported.
