Demonstrators gathered to protest against hate despite the cancelled free-speech rally that city leaders had feared could draw out right-wing extremists and cause a repeat of the violence that broke out in Charlottesville two weeks ago.
The planned gathering by the group Patriot Prayer had been the centerpiece of a weekend of protests in the Bay area.
"If we let a little bit of hate speech, if we let a little bit of Nazi's in, they're going to spread and they're going to end up killing our people. The way to defeat that is this, power of the people, organizing, showing up in thousands and making it known that we're not going to let them spread their hate speech."
At least one person was arrested when minor scuffles broke out between counter-protestors and police.
