Royal Oman Police warns public after woman exploited for OMR6,000

Muscat: A man has been arrested and charged with assaulting, exploiting and threatening a woman to pay a lump sum of money in exchange for not releasing her picture, according to a statement released by the Royal Oman Police (ROP).
The incident occurred in the Governorate of Al Buraimi, where police say the woman made a report to the ROP, stating she was being threatened and exploited through WhatsApp by international and local numbers.
"The culprit contacted the woman, claiming to be a girl and exchanged photographs and private pictures. He then started to threaten her with exploiting her picture in exchange for OMR6,000," the ROP said.
In the statement, the police described the picture as being "shameful" and the culprit asked OMR500 every month. Fortunately, the ROP was able to conduct an investigation and arrested the accused.
The ROP calls on users of the Internet and social media to be cautious about being victims of fraud and extortion, avoiding deviant behaviour, and not sending private and personal images to strangers.
"Families and guardians must educate their children about these risks and how to act when they fall into the trap of fraud," the ROP said.
